How I use these two strategies to boost my self-confidence and help me Bet on myself and win against Imposter Syndrome
Being a Freelancer or Small Business owner can be a lonely and scary place. It can be even harder when you are faced with self-sabotage and imposter syndrome that feel like invisible chains holding you back and makes it almost impossible to bet on yourself.
If you’re a normal weirdo, like me, then you have some level of self-confidence issues. These “issues” may present itself more in some scenarios than in others. Like when you finally get that new client or win that deal you’ve been working on for a while, or hire that amazing person. Imposter syndrome may just pull up at your door diverting your attention to the negatives and taking away from all the hard work that you’ve put in to get to this point.
It’s normal to feel anxiety and like you’re some sort of an imposter when facing new challenges. Here’s what I’ve used to help BET on myself, and practices that you can use to bet on yourself so you are better prepared to deal with it and create the life and business you know you are capable of.
Write down things you like about yourself
This can be hard especially when you already feel like an imposter. So write about things unrelated to business or your work. For me that will be things like,
- I’m a funny person,
- I care about people – for real,
- I don’t mind being silly, especially when it brings a smile to someone’s day.
Writing down what you like about yourself creates good feelings for your self-image and affirmation for better self-worth – It makes you feel better.
The reason we want to write these down, like in the previous post where I share how you can use your past experiences to get ahead of imposter syndrome, is so you can read it back to yourself and have your mind hear it. This turns up the positivity volume and turns down the negative vibes you’ve been sending yourself.
Write down a list of 3 friendships you’ve had in your life
This can be current or past – like childhood.
Just the act of writing these friendships down will invoke the feelings of deep connection that you have with these friends. It will remind you of those special happy memories and you will feel better. Writing down these friendships is a great way to reflect on just how you feel about those people and what qualities you like about them
I have friendships from my schooling days, I have friendships from varsity, and I have friendships formed in business. All of which have people in them with different qualities.
Now that you are thinking about those friendships and the great qualities you love about them, it’s also possible that if they think about these friendships and you, they would find some of the qualities that you like about yourself, and maybe even other qualities that you may not be aware of or want to openly acknowledge.
The results can be great when you bet on yourself
Writing these two things down will firstly, have qualities that you like about yourself that others probably like about you as well. There may even be qualities that others like about you that you aren’t aware of. The second will remind you that you are capable of making deep connections with other people and that you have value beyond the material things you hold. This will restore confidence and help you take more bets on yourself that ultimately will lead to more business and revenue.
Betting on yourself is a skill that I’ve learnt to tap into more than any other skill. It’s your superpower.
So lean in and take care.
